Dual monitor, dual sound cards??
I'm going to setup dual monitor with geforce 8500 T or 8600 GT card. Both support two DVIs.
1. How does the audio output work when I have 2 monitors?
2. Can I assign which audio goes to whichever sound card/speaker?
3. Do I need to get two speakers (one for each monitor)?
4. Do I need to get two sound cards (one for each LD monitor)?

Thanks a lot.

Wat?

Why would you need two soundcards and two speaker sets? It's not individual OSes with dual monitors, it's simply two displays for the same desktop - one large desktop.

I would think you only need one video card that has two outputs.

And you just get one soundcard, and use one set of speakers.

you need a splitter.

You can buy them at any radioshack or hardware store.

Depending on your sound card and quality, you dont need to get an expensive one cuz they will all sound the same.

Ive been using this setup for a while, if i now could only find a splitter what isolates left and right i would be super happy.

and no, you dont need to hook both of them up. I have one connected to headphones 24/7 and i mute the ones not on headphones when im using them.

And as far as i know with all onboard sound, you can not isolate L/R on the motherboard output ports. :\

As i said you need a splitter if your going that route. Unless you want one to produce center, and the other to do stereo, or rear.

1.
Would you show me how a splitter look like?

I'm searching for "audio splitter" at http://www.nextag.com/audio-splitter/search-html
There are plenty results. Confusing.

How much does it normally cost?

2.
I want to do the following:
Any sound generated in desktop A (monitor A) will go out from speaker A. Any sound generated in desktop B will go out from speaker B.
Even better, I can assign sounds from a particular application to go out from any specific speaker. I may setup more speakers for that.

Is this setup possible?

If so, how? What do I need to buy?

If I get you correctly, the splitter only help me to output the sound to 2 sets of speakers at once. I can't assign which sound goes to which speaker. Am I correct?

I don't mind purchasing a sound card if this can make it possible.

Thanks a lot.

So do you have TWO computers or just one? You have not made that really clear here.

If its one computer you can't isolate sound from monitor 1 and monitor 2

You should only need a combination of 1 add-in sound card, 1 onboard sound, or 1 usb sound device. Assigning sound to a particular device depends on the application (most allow you to switch output like DVD players, Voice software etc.), otherwise all sound will come out of your Windows Default Sound Device. There are potential problems when you enable multiple sound devices, its still one of the worst implemented subsystems on modern PCs. I think your safest bet is 1) either onboard or add-in card combined with 2) some kind of external USB sound device (less potential for hardware conflicts).

Of course 1 computer with dual monitors.
Otherwise the answer is obvious.

Well, maybe some technology that I'm unaware of can do it. That's why I asked.

You might be better off explaining what you want fully instead of asking incremental questions.

I think someone has answered me. Assigning sound to a particular device depends on the application, not the desktop/monitor.

Why two video cards? Each of those cards will support dual monitors.
