I put together a PC based on
MSI Z68MA-ED55 motherboard
core i7-2600k
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
I have a Dell U2711 monitor which I want to run as a single monitor at full resolution of 2560 by 1440. The monitor has DVI, Display Port, and HDMI connections (plus analog). When using DVI, dual link is required to get the full resolution.
The motherboard has a DVI connection with all the pins for dual-link. It also has HDMI, but no Display Port.
It was suggested to me on another forum that the motherboard's DVI connection only supports single link DVI. Moreover, I read in this thread that Sandy Bridge does not support dual link DVI !

Can anyone confirm the Sandy Bridge limitation? I tried to confirm the motherboard limitation with MSI but their support form doesn't seem to work.
Is there any work around? Would the HDMI port on the motherboard (and Sandy bridge chip) support 2560 by 1440? Is there any way to use a Display Port adaptor (I think no, because it would be bottlenecked through the DVI or HDMI?)
I have a graphics card in an old machine that runs the U2711 very nicely at full resolution. I could use that, but it seems like a kludge and a waste of power (not a lot but I want to keep the machine quiet and its the principle).
If I have to go the graphics card route, are there any power-efficient fairly low-end cards you could recommend (if it is a big improvement over a 2008 card). I just use this machine for Adobe Lightroom/PSE and light video editing/transcoding - not games.
Thanks!
