Might not be in its' prime yet (afterall it's been out for what 1-2 months now?) but saying DL technology is useless is kinda funny.

Why would it be useless? you can fit twice the data on one disc. How is that useless?

I am quite sure that he just has a SL burner and has convinced himself DL is useless because he doesnt want to feel outdated.

I admit it sucks :) I have a 2.4X Sony and a 4x Lite-On and REALLY want a DL burner too. I can wait until the speeds come up and media goes down though. I just hope the PS2 doesn't have any issues playing them. We'll see. Good prices though. Probably would pick one up but I got caught in the Digital Rebel deal last week from OneCall. Can't spend too much or the wife'll kill me!

2x the capacity is definitely not useless. if he were to say its "useless for now" he could be right (media being so scarce and expensive) but DL overall is definitely NOT useless. thats like saying "500gb hard drives = useless". i think someone just has a SL and cant accept the fact that there is something better out now.

Don't you need to write the entire disk with DL in order to have proper reflective properties? Thought I read something like that.

its like buying the fastest cpu that's not even out yet and in a few years you can get it for next to nothing!
poor investment imo.

115 isn't that expensive, and for those people who want to back up their dual layer movie DVDs it's a great investment.

Read one post from a guy who said he was getting quite a few coasters burning CDRs with one. It's the next-to-last post (at the moment) in this Hot Deals thread. Have you done any CDR burning with it?

Even for somebody with no DVD burner? You can get the NEC 2510a for less than $90. Granted, you can get the NEC 2500a (doesn't burn DL) for ~$10 cheaper, but the $10 difference isn't that great and you get DL support. Somebody just might want to do some DL burning, especially when the media prices drop, which they will, of course.

it takes like 5 years for cdr to become less useful and sl is going to take another 5 years or so before dl become a standard :-( and dl is not twice the capacity of sl, a bit disappointed. usually they dont rush technology and try to milk us sheeps as much as possible so I could be right! :D

Do elaborate!
I find DL burners too slow to be of interest to me at this time, however, having the capability is better than not having it. You can argue that media is expensive/not available and the burn time is too high; I agree! But useless, it is not. DL technology has to start somewhere, just like SL and CDs did. If nobody pushes it forward, however slow, we'll never get to benefit from competition and improved technology.

You could indeed be right, but probably (I think) from your own twisted point of view. For another $10 you can have your DL support. OK, you already have a SL drive, so for you it would be a $90 investment. For me, who has NO DVD burner at all, it's an additional $10 investment for DL support. It just might be worth it for me to plunk down that extra $10 to have DL support for the next 5 years, right?

DL right now is slow and expensive:

Expensive = $5/disk
How long does it take to burn a DL disk at 2.4x? ______ hours, ______ minutes.

The only real use for DL right now besides copying 1:1 dvd movies is copying 1:1 dvd9 ps2/xbox games.

Now that I agree with, epsecially if you already have an good SL burner. However if you need a DVD burner and dont have one yet, the NEC is a great buy, because it gives you DL (albeit slow )

I do agree its not a wise decision to upgrade if you already have a good SL burner though.

Hmmm that would suck if you only have one drive. However I have a nive lite on CDRW that I plan on keeping in my PC.

My question is this:

It seems like EVERY dvd movie out there these days is dual layer. However, my sisters boyfriend backs up his DL movies onto SL discs. How does this work? Some kind of compression? How much quality do you lose?

What other use would there be ever? Except for more data storage?

Also, with the cost of media Vs. hard drive dvd's make a poor alternative for back up. if you can get a 120GB HD for 40$, you would need about 50DVDs or 25 dual layer DVD's to back it up.....

I doubt optical storage will ever be a good choice for back ups ever again, except for smaller backups that you want in multiple places such as perhaps documents and photos.

Yes, that's it exactly. Programs like DVD Shrink can help you fit DVDs onto a SL disk. You can get rid of unnecessary stuff like subs, other languages, audio you can't support, menus, extras, etc, and/or you can compress the movie some. Compression is usually unnoticable up to around 70-80%

I do have a Liteon burner in the box. Problem is I have a firewire card I haven't installed yet and need a slot. That slot could be my soundcard (use onboard audio) but I prefer the solution of yanking my IDE controller card. To do that I need one less IDE device. I figure I'll get that by putting in a DVD burner and pulling my CDRW and DVD-Rom drives. So, to get this plan to work, I need a DVD burner that will do an OK job burning CDRs and CDRWs. That's why I'm asking about this possible problem. It seems to have been a problem for that one guy and I wonder if others are having the same problem: NEC 2510a making coasters. If so, I guess the Liteon DVD burner might be the better idea.

Muse,

I got NEC 2510A, and I just backup 5 cds without any coasters. This drive is working fine for me :)
