Ok so i am getting a 8x Dual Layer DVD burner from NEC...

i have some questions if anyone has some answer

1. How much better are dual layer DVD burners...

2. I have never had a DVD burner before..Can i copy like DVD movies or is that not possible? Can i play DVDS in like DVD players?

3. inst 8x really slow or is there a diff scale for DVD burners.

Thx!

1. They are not "better". They just hold twice as much data(Around 8GB) as a single sided DVD(around 4GB). Hence, dual layer.

2. If you already have a DVD-ROM drive on your PC, you can do straight disc to disc burns of your movies and games. Copies should play just fine in a standard home theater DVD player, provided it supports the right formats.

3. I'm pretty sure it's a different scale.

I'm not completely sure. I hear they can read them. Only one side at a time, though.

Dual layer isn't two sided. It's two layers at different levels on the same side. Unless you mean just one layer at a time on the disk, which of course you are correct. It has a different angle of refraction to read the disk on one layer or another I believe and of course there is only one laser beam so it can only read one at a time.

Any DVD drive can certainly read dual-layer discs. Most movies you buy on DVD are on dual-layer so of course they can read them.

Side? Layer? It's all the same to me. :D:beer:

Thanks for the info. Haven't look too much into DL media yet since it's still so skyhigh expensive.

Just to note, pressed DVDs, can be both double-sides and dual-layer too.
