Dual Layer DVD Burners

Looking at the Sony DR-810A dual layer (DL) DVD burner. Have been using a Sony DRU-510A burner for a while now. Are there any compelling reasons for upgrading to the 810A or other DL DVD burners other than speed and capacity. I don't see a big cost saving considering the price of the DL DVD-Rs or DL DVD-RWs.

Nah.

As soon as DVD burners hit 16x speeds (their max), the reasons to upgrade disappeared.
Even dual-layer is still too expensive, so for those who have non DL burners, i'd say even they have no need to upgrade.

QFT.
I primarily use my old 4x NON D/L Sony DR-510 and as back up I have a Pioneer A09 which is 16x D/L. I have yet to make a D/L disc as it is too costly. Got the pioneer for free but even if I didnt id still stick with my Sony dr-510. 4X 16X its all the same to me. I dont want to spend the money on 16x media anyway. 🙂 and my sony has yet to make a coaster in over 2 years and 100s of DVDs.

my nec 3540 burns 8x dl media but i have yet to use it...8x dvd+r is just so much cheaper right now. If it's a dvd9 just shrink it down to a 5

I have the DRU-800A, bought it because Best Buy had it reduced to $69 after rebate, it is nice to have DL burning capability but I've yet to use it. They recommend Verbatim DL media and it's not cheap at all.

For storage, it might come in handy but I doubt I need anything over the standard DVD-R capacity.

Unless your older Sony doesnt' cut it anymore speedwise, you can probably still find a 800A for a reduced price since the 810A replaced it. I seen them at a few of the local chain stores marked down.

Some people say hold out for Blu-ray & HD-DVD, for the price of a DVD drive nowadays, it's not much of a investment.

You are so correct (and previous responses too). The only reason I can think to buy a DL DVD burner now is for burning video. Easier to burn more and play back on single DVD. But for HD video, really need to wait for a higher capacity DVD recording technology (maybe that will come with Blu-Ray). I recently stored a one hour HD broadcast on my computer running XP MCE 2005. The file size is 6GB. Not going to be able to fit much HD on a single DL DVD-R (e.g., not a movie)!
