This is why I bought a regular DVD burner. These would've just been delayed indefinitely until I personally bought a single layer burner. You can all thank me now.

It'll be nice to burn more than 2 hours of video now. For what I do, I can use it. It's nice to see that there will be a DVD-R version of it right away (Looks like Sony is doing the DVD-R). I need to burn to DVD-R for compatibility.

That's a pretty reasonable price for the drive, hopefully the media will be reasonably priced as well. I'll probably wait a year or so till some of the kinks are worked out. I'm pretty happy with my Pioneer burner, maybe Pioneer will release that rumored firmware that will allow you to burn a dual layer dvd :)

It's not the cost of the drives that would stop me from getting a dual-layer burner right away... It's the media.
Sony estimates the blank discs will cost $5 to $6.

Can't wait until they come up with dual-sided quad-layered spectrum encoded DVDs. Both sides will have data two different laser eyes will access it simultaneously, there will be 4 layers on each side, and each layer will have an analog type encoding using the light spectrum to represent a full byte at a time. All this with a much more compressed data track (about 4x), and you have yourself a 1 Tera-byte DVD.

I wonder what the dvd player compatability will be on these things. Probably worse then single layered. I also wonder if Layer change will be exagerated.

You have to think $5-$8 for a blank media copy or $16 for a new movie. hmm
