Dual Intel Xeon versus Dual AMD MP

I was wondering if anyone have any experience with both dual xeon and dual AMD MP servers setup? The cost of the CPU is almost the same nowaday, but the overhead on the cost of the mother board is quite different between the two platform. In a server environment, under Windows 2000, is the performance on the dual AMD MP comparable to dual Xeon (512K cache version) - i.e. Dual Xeon 2.0G versus Dual AMD MP 2.0G? Or perhaps, the Dual Xeon is better in SQL environment rather than in a web environment. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated..

Also, are there any overheating issue with the dual AMD MP I need to worry about? (Especially in event the internal fans die. I know it is much much easier to fry an AMD MP CPU than a Xeon

Well, Im no expert, but I know this much.. the P4 will throttle itself in the event of a cooling breakdown, the MP will just fry. That probably would be a major determining factor for you...

The dual-AMD boards should cut power to the CPUs if their onboard diodes indicate a temperature spike. You can find some direct comparisons between dual-Xeon and dual-AMP systems here. I read a review of a new dual-AMD board at LostCircuits recently, and the moral of the story is that if you really are going to use 4Gb of R-ECC memory, go large on the power supply 😀

edit: these Forums are running on dual-AMD systems made by APPRO, if I'm not mistaken. They have three Nidec ball-bearing centrifugal blowers ducted to the CPUs, so there is some pretty good failover there. If you want to check those out, have a look here.
