Well, I decided that I didnt want to build a new gaming rig, since my current one does everything I want and more........damn that logic :(

So I bought a pair of the xeons for 90$ each and will be building a server instead.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Does it have to be ecc? I would assume it would run with non ecc mem

late, but anyway.

ECC is not a must as the boards I have seen (limited number) that take ECC can have the feature turned off.

Not using registered can be a issue as it is to help communication on the memory bus when using more than 2 ram sticks at once. So if you want to use all ram slots, registered ram is nearly a must for a stable system.

if only using 2 ram slots per memory channel, then it will not matter. It is only a issue if you really want that max ram of 96GB.
