A number of our members are electrical engineers and technicians who could answer your question, but I'm afraid the answer would be a text book on power supply design, which would require far more space than can fit easily into one or a few replies in a forum thread.

I suggest searching for tutorials and application notes and data sheets from manufacturers of power supply semiconductor IC's and modules. Here are a few to start:

International Rectifier

Linear Technology

Maxim Semiconductor

Texas Instruments

One example of the kind of application note you need is this tutorial from Maxim Semiconductor:

APPLICATION NOTE 4087

An Introduction to Switch-Mode Power Supplies

Sep 27, 2007

Abstract: Switch-mode power supplies are a popular and sometimes necessary choice for DC-DC power conversion. These circuits offer distinct benefits and tradeoffs when compared to alternative methods of converting DC power. This article presents a brief summary of the advantages and tradeoffs of switch-mode power supplies, and also offers a simple review of their operation and theory.

You can also download the above tutorial as a PDF file.

Hope that helps. 🙂
