Dual HDD bay laptops - Common?

edro

Lifer
I haven't been following laptops for a while, but recently started shopping.

I want one for <$500 that has dual HDD bays, so I can use my 120gb SDD for main boot and also have a 500gb+ HDD for file storage.

I know you can swap the optical drive for a HDD on a lot of laptops, but I don't see this feature advertised much.
I don't care if it sits in the optical drive bay, or another bay. I wouldn't use the optical drive anyway.

What key words should I shop for to ensure the laptop can support 2 HDDs?

I only need the laptop for internet, photoshop, very light gaming, etc. An i3 with 6gb RAM would be fine.
Do the dual HDD bays come on small entry level laptops?
Or is it mainly a feature on larger business class laptops?

Thanks!

Go to ebay and see if there's a cheap 2nd HDD bay caddy for the optical drive and swap it yourself. That's what I usually do and it costs ~$10 for the bay adapter.

Wow, the first 3 laptop models I tried had caddys on eBay for <$20.
That's good to know. Thanks!

If you have an Optical Drive, you can certainly swap. Also I know some times, not all as it depends on the particular model, have empty spaces where they pack on Msata drives. If your particular model offers an Msata drive as a build option, then your in luck 🙂. To know specifically find the workshop manual and see if its a listed part 🙂
