Dual GPU single card solutions

I'm now considering building a new system. I'd like to make it expandable if possible. I can get x1900s in a crossfire solution today but that gives me little growth for future games. I'd love to get a dual GPU single card solution so I can add a second one later on.

Any word on when these dual core GPU video cards might become mainstream - seems like the only way to minimize long term expenditures. Problem is the dual core ones I've read about were limited edition ones so they were outrageously expensive.

For the Nvidia based ones you still need an SLI motherboard for them to work, unless you mod your nForce4 Ultra board to SLI. Even then, you can't drop in another card for what would be quad-SLI. It's just not worth it IMO, either go for dual cards or just get one card right now.

I see that Tom's hardware has done some dual core configurations - however the dual core cards were limited editions so a tad pricey.

You can pick up 2 7800GT's in FS/FT for around $270 each, the Dual 7800GT would be sweet to have, but way too expensive.

By dual cards I meant two separate cards. The two-GPU cards just aren't worth it.
