Dual F@H SMP Clients in Windows

A couple things to remember:

each installation must have a different machine ID assigned to it (you do this in the advanced options section of the configuration)

Also, you must have the -local switch in the shortcut you use to start each instance.

When I do my install I like to start clean and do one at a time similar to what follows:

re-boot to stop all fah clients

delete all the existing fah folders to make sure no leftovers are hanging around

create new folders, one for each instance I'm going to install (eg: c:\foldingSMP 1, C\foldingSMP 2, etc...)

now run the downloaded installation file and make sure to point to one of the new folders. Now, go there and run the install.bat file, now double click the fah.exe file to run this installations' configuration, set machine ID to 1. finally create a shortcut to this fah.exe file (name it SMP 1) and add the flags you want to the end of the target line (outside the quotes) I use -local -forceasm -advmethods -verbosity 9. Don't re-start the client yet (we're going to install the others)

do the exact same process except make sure the folder is the second folder, name your shortcut with a 2 and make sure you set the machine ID to 2.

now do it again for the 3rd and 4th installations.

when you're all done with this, re-boot (just to be sure)

now start each instance using the shortcuts you created.

This beast may be too much for Windows!

64 bit Linux!!!

Or perhaps Windows Server?

Well, I'm waving the white flag on this. I spent the day reloading a clean installation of x64 and installing 4 separate installations of the SMP client into different directories. I created unique short cuts and assigned machine IDs of 1 to 4.

It looks like they're running fine but every time I shut them down, the WUs become corrupted.

I'm just going to run 2 clients and forget about trying to run 4 clients with Affinity Changer.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Glad to help.

You almost had it.

The inability to use Cntrl^C or close instances of SMP by closing their windows is a known issue that applies to multiple SMP client installs. The only reliable way to shutdown multiple instances of SMP is to do a normal shutdown (or restart) of Windows and just not start them back up unitl you want them to run.

Quick update, been running 2 x SMP clients for a while now. Gives me at least 3520 PPD and some days up to 7040 PPD. I've been fairly satisfied with the performance of the Xeons.
