ok i have a GF2 GTS plugged into a 21". My old 17" is sitting around doing essentially nothing, so i'm thinking i should buy another PCI video card and use win XP's dual display mode. I know that windows won't match up very well if i try to span them across the monitors, but the 17" would be a good monitor for displaying my tv tuner window in without losing work space on my 21".
Questions:

1) Has anyone tried this? How well does it work?

2) I'm looking for a cheap, <$40 PCI card that will be used to power the second monitor. Any recommendations? I'm looking at something like a TnT2

3) Is there some limitation that says i have to run them both at the same resolution? Because there's no way my 17" will support 1600x1200. I figure as long as i dont span windows across the monitors, i should be ok, right?

Lets see..

1. Yes, it works well.

2. I got a Matrox G200 PCI for $20 on newegg, its great.

3. You can run in any res combos. I have my 19" at 1280x1024, and my 17" at 1152x864.

You could also use Nvidia's nView program that comes with there newer drivers. I use Ultramon myself.

i found the GF2 MX200 32mb PCI for $37. Seems perfect, except i get this on the website:

Not supported: The ability to support 2 displays at the same time using NVIDIA nView? technology or Windows? native Extended Desktop mode (DualView).

Why wouldnt i be able to use this for a dual display setup?

Thats just saying the GF2MX by itself wouldnt be able to use dual display. You could use both of them to run it just fine I would assume.
