Dual display issues

I'm using an ATI 4850 with VGA, DVI and HDMI outputs. My monitor is an older VGA only LCD. I would like to use my HDTV as a second display. (All I want is a cloned display, don't care about desktop stretching.) I had this setup working fine with an 8800gt using a component output to the tv.

If I plug in the hdmi cable to the tv while in windows my main screen goes blank, the tv shows nothing and I obviously cant do anything.

While booting I can see my BIOS screen on both displays just fine. So, obviously, there is nothing fundamentally wrong with the cable the tv or the connection. I can see the first windows loading screen, then both displays go blank when I get to the windows log on screen. If I unplug the HDMI cable my main monitor fires back up and I can continue normally.

Any help would be appreciated.

I had a similaiar problem with a 3650 hooked to a VGA monitor and a HDMI TV. To complicate matters my VGA went through a KVM switch. It worked fine in XP but screwed up in Win7. It has to be the driver.

I fixed the problem by using it on the TV only. That was fine since I only used it as a DVR anyway.

Gave up on the HDMI connection. Got a DVI to VGA cable. (this TV has a D-sub connector but no DVI). Now it works fine but if I set the refresh rate over 60hz the tv goes black. My main monitor wont run its native res at anything other than 75 hz. So to get the duplication of display that I want I have to run my PC screen at non-native res.

At least now it basically works well enough, I just wanted my guests on turkey day to be able to watch the game from my couch or dinner table.
