Ok here's my dilemma:

I have an Athlon 1.2 (of the "C" variety) with 768 MBs of ram, a GTS2 video card (32 megs), ATI-TV Tuner (TV Wonder PCI) and 21" monitor. I also have a 17" monitor laying around. I'm planning to hook up said 17" monitor so that the gf can watch tv while i program. Instead of her having to watch in a little window so i can do work, i figure i can hook up the 17" to a second PCI video card.

2 Questions:

What kind of PCI video card will i need? Any? Or ones that are "compatible?"

Will ATI TV wonder interface have problems being displayed on the second screen?

I have a PCI ATI Xpert 98 as my secondary video card and I can use my ATI TV Wonder on both monitors just fine. Apparently, it lets you do overlay.

can i use different resolutions on both monitors? I want to run my 17" at 1280 and my 21" at 1600.

what operating system do you use?

i run two monitors under win2000..works great.

you should be able to set resolution for each monitor separately.

depending on your operating system..do a search at the operating system site (such as microsoft.com for ms operating systems), and search for multiple monitors...the faqs should have all your answers.

my advice...ask around for a "free" pci video card for your "second" monitor..you will be amazed at the number of decent pci video cards getting thrown out at major corporations, hospitals, businesses, as they periodically upgrade their computers..you don't need anything fancy..just compatibile..so check the web sites for the operating system and the tv tuner card to make sure you get a supported video card..

Although I do not have any actual experience with this setup, I am pretty sure it will work for you. ATI has software that supports multi-monitor setups, and allows you to view TV on just one monitor (MMC software and Hydravision), as do other applications (like DVD players, etc.). I had a friend that had 3 monitors setup at once, and with a little work, he was able to get it functioning with no problems. He had one AGP vid card, and two PCI. He was running Win2k. He was able to setup different resolutions for the different cards too, so that shouldn't be a problem. As for compatibility, I know he had some cards that just didn't work (the older 2MB and 4MB cards he had laying around) and some that did. I remember him picking up a mad dog 32mb PCI card, and that worked well for him with his ATI card, so that may be something to look at (no guaranties though).
