Viahardware Review

The IWill DVD266-R shows us all that the VIA Apollo Pro 266 chipset does support SMP and that performance can be gained by DDR with the Pentium 3, especially in a dual processor setup.

The DVD266 final revision performed very well against our early revision along with being one of the top performing Apollo Pro 266 chipset boards we have tested here at VH. The layout concerns we addressed are scheduled to be fixed in a future revision along with Tualatin support.

The 4.1 channel C-media sound is a nice addition to those choosing not to purchase an additional sound card. The overclocking options on the DVD266 are very impressive and can only be compared to Abit's Soft Menu III. The Smart settings offer a true "jumperless" overclocking experience with the only jumpers for the DVD266 being to disable the onboard RAID and sound.

A few other manufacturers have announced similar boards, though none currently shipping. IWill has recently announced that the DVD266 is actually shipping and should be available in stores now.

In the end, the DVD266 brings Double Data Rate memory to the SMP world. With its increased performance, features, and overclocking options it is looking to surely be a hit in the marketplace.

Too bad only the $300+ 512k L2 cache Taulatins will support SMP.
