My friend has 2 g to spend on a computer roughly. I usually help him out on this kinda stuff but he just mentioned daul opertons. I know nothing about dual CPUs so here i am to ask some qeustions and help him out.

He mostly games, and just general school work..He takes videos and stores them but i dont think he does any actual video editing. He does some graphic work tho.

Are dual CPUS better then lets say a 3500 or even a 3800 AMD64?

Unless he is hell bent on it, the price of 2 processors isn't worth it. Him having to ask period kind of hints that he doesn't need them. For the money it will cost, they are probably better off going with a FX-53 or 3500+. To me, the 3500+ presents the best value and you can easily overclock it to 3800+ speed. Most bang for the buck if you ask me when going for a higher end system.

I fully agre. If hes gonna be doing gaming he wont be needing dual cpus. As RockGuitarDude said. Tell him to go with the 3500+ and get some good cooling and overclock it to 3800+ and over. it will serve him better and will leave more money for gfx, storage, ram, monitor whatevar :p

Unless you can get Dual Opterons really cheap it's much more worthwhile to just get a fast, single CPU system. You could go the MPX route but it's kinda getting out of date now (no point in buying at this point in time unless it's just for basic usage) but an Athlon64 will be more than enough!

Two thousand is not enough for a dual opteron system .. Dual mobo about $500, 2gig ram(4x512) $600, 2 x 248's ($668 ea) That's about $2500 just for the mobo, memory & processors. Yes the system will be damm fast but there is a cost for that performance.....

Tell him to look at a 939 mobo(ie gigabyte) + A64 3500(939) + 1 gig of ram.. This will still be $346(proc) + $220(mobo) + $215 (ram) = $781 more resonable.
That leaves him w/ $1219 - $400(6800GT) = $819 leftover for the rest ... case, sound , ps, dvd-rw, monitor.

Jose

Dual Opterons is a complete waste. For gaming? You get much better perforamce with an A64 3500+ paired with a top of the line GPU.

The only reason for dual CPUs (aside from great multi-tasking) would be IF you got 64bit PCI slots and SCSI, so you could get some great HD performance. With hist budget, forget that, I agree with the others. Go a 3500 or 3800 and a good video card 6800GT or X800pro.

you forgot dual's are good for workstation users, i.e. video editing, 3d rendering, etc. but it doesn't sound like this guy will be doing that, so I agree get a single fast proc and a good video card.

unless you can state a good reason for dual cpu's, stick with single. since you said gaming, you'll want to stick with single cpu, since getting a dual opteron to perform the same would cost over double the $.

But is he willing to pay the additional cost for a dual cpu setup ?? Animation would benefit from a dual system, but it's would cost close to $4000.

Maybe if he cripples it with slow opterons and not enough ram it would cost the same ;)

For opteron gaming suggestion:

AMD64 FX-53/Opteron 150 CPU
Asus SK8V Motherboard
Mushkin PC3200 Registered ECC RAM, 512 x 2
Maxtor 18.4GB 68pin U160-SCSI 10,000RPM Hard Drive (8 meg Cache)

Above rig is actual game server and has never crashed once (so I've been told).
