Dual Cores

Well in a few days i will be investing in my first dual core processer. However what i would like to know is say you buy an X2 3800+ will there be two 3800+ cores or the equivilent of two 1900+ cores that are used together to make 3800? Sorry for the newbie question by the way 🙂

neither, the 3800 is just a part of amd's naming system, it has 2*2.0GHz cores or 2*3200+ venices if you prefer (it doesn't actually have 2 venices under there)

Yes, it has 2 cores @ 2.0GHz each.

1)for single threaded apps, you willl get performance similar to amd 64 single core 2ghz only.

why don't you get c2d

Why don't you leave it at answering the OP's question, and stop recommending uber-gear (C2D/x1900xtx) in every reply you make?

Because he's an expert at overclocking, even though he just learned the basics a week or so ago.

No kidding, I dont see anywhere where the OP mentioned c2d. akshayt should STFU if that is all he has to offer.

I have a question for the thread though - would the performance of a 4800+ X2 be similar to the performance of my 4000+ chip in single threaded apps? I was thinking of picking up one of these next week, if I am still able to find one.

Yes, they're both the same clock speed with the same l2 cache, so they will handle about the same on single-theaded apps

I think it would actually run slightly better, cause it would take the load of the background apps off that core...but just a very slight improvement (unless you run 40 background apps)...
