Well I was browsing Google news and found some press preleases that Dell is taking orders now for Dual Core Xeon Processors. The new chips are to be released/announced by intel in about a month's time and will operate at up to 2.8GHz w/ up to 2MB Cache per core.

Also today AMD released officially the Opteron x80 line (2.4GHz Dual Core)

This is great news for opteron users as the elderly dual core opterons will start coming down in price a little more. Also, a max of 2.8gHz for Xeon off the bat does not sound too impressive to me IMO. Intel will have to use the pricing squeeze play as they did with Pentium D to get any sort of respect with this new chip I think.

It will be interesting to see how the DC Xeon compares to the Pentium D. Maybe iNtel did a better job hacking this one together

Bleh.

Nothing exciting there. Whenever I see something from Intel, its hard to feel enthusiastic... I mean, they just anounced the their i975X chipset. Big deal... nothing new there.

Then we have these new Xeons which I am sure are just as the Pentium D: two cores glued up- unless they can actually come up something revolutionary (read AMD style) then I simply cant feel excited about anything from them. Not at all.

I don't seriously think that Intel looks for respect in this type of forum. Xeon's have a special place in the server market place and I'm sure that they will sell like hot cakes. There are still hundreds and hundreds of companies that would use AMD if they were given the stuff with a gold watch to boot. Intel marketing has created enough 'fear uncertaintity and doubt', FUD, to convince many IT operations that going AMD is a sure career ender.

Intel's strategy in pulling in PAXVILLE is to satisfy Dell and not loose more of its costumer to AMD. Plus SUN is putting more pressure on DELL. I dont think PAXVILLE can give enough performance gain as against the OPTERON. Unless Intel made some tweaking on this but if you look at the spec they are just similar to smithfield and are still 90nm tech. But good thing is these are design for MP space converted to DP which I believe Inteldid a lot of improvement plus the supporting chipset on this. I would rather wait for bensley, a 65nm Dempsey, blackford and ESB2/Gilgal. This platform I think do have a lot of feature and will give AMD some competition......

These should also have HT enabled too, right? Dual Dual-core Xeon's might be nice if you can figure out a way to cool them.

And can find someone else to pay the power bills for your server center...:)

Yeah, they will have HT. Regardless, dual Opteron 2.4's should wipe the floor with dual 2.8 or 3 Ghz Xeons. Even with 4MB of total cache on the Xeons.

Speaking of which, can you imagine the die size on one of those buggers?

No, I do not expect Intel to please us those who can actually read before buying computer hardware... but I do feel dissapointed that an enterprise that is supposed to deliver IMPRESSIVE products (by their size, for starters) continues to show us mediocre products that are hardly worth reading reviews about.

Server wise, Opteron has no competition. None whatsoever. Come on... a Dual core opteron of 55W? how can Intel EVER compete with that?

although performance wise Opteron leads in every Intel's offering but platform wise I think Intel can leverage on this. I've been comparing systems and seems that Intel do have lots of feature on their platform. You may disagree but I guees this is what I'm seeing :)

No, no... I don't disagree at all...

What I would like is to know what plataform advantages are you speaking of?

Seeing nForce 2000 Pro, I can hardly imagine what I could want in an Intel that I couldn't have on an AMD.
