why would they want to make a dual core smartphone for? It would kill battery! Just like GPU when you play Angry Bird game it sucks battery juice real quickly. I don't think they are going to improve battery usage or they can put bigger battery into smartphone.

its the opposite really, especially under light loads, you save battery by having several cores, as each core can be run at lower clock and voltage while still completing the task, which saves a lot of power compared to having a single core running full clock/voltage.

Of course if you are going to load both cores at 100% there is going to be a penalty, but then either you are running a workload which you cant with a single core, or its going to take the single core twice as long... which means, it will eat your battery for twice as long.

The only real downside is static leakage, which is increased, but I think with ARM chips thats so low as to be neglectable.

If you believe Nvidia's claims, Tegra 2 actually has lower power consumption than today's 45nm single core designs. , and equal TDP under load. So your battery life should be roughly identical to today's top end devices.

Dual core is not synonymous to inefficient. Expect similar battery life to current smartphones now.

Keep telling yourself that. Battery life is supposed to be similar to current chips and it's a huge leap forward.

yeah youre right just like these current i5's take so much more power than old p4's

We've progressed to the point where parts inside of the single core can be turned off when not needed. What makes you think that the second core will be drawing power when not needed?

Weak rant. Yep, battery life of modern smartphones sucks. No, properly implemented dual cores will not make it worse. I could improve it a touch but most likely will remain the same.

Jobs will decide whether or not you need a dual core, and what you should be doing with it.

just like he did with Adobe Flash for iphone he might do same thing with dual core...he knows too much

I believe he decided you didn't need Flash? I know it was hacked into the iPad, but I'm not certain if it was adapted into any of the iPhone products.

Flash isn't something I use every day, but it is nice to be able to go to Flash sites and watch them without the use of a dedicated app.

I believe the battery concerns are valid but fully expect both the processing tech and the the battery tech to improve.

We will continue to suffer poor battery life not because the battery tech is bad or the devices are too power hungry BUT because we want tiny slim phones with tiny slim batteries that don't have enough juice!

The uP's, whether they single core or multi-core are going to eat about the same amount of power for the foreseeable future because the advances made in uP design and fabrication will be countered by growing need for processing power on the phone. The LCD's are going to get still larger and higher resolution and will tend to eat more power. The radios maybe improved a bit but for the time being the total daily energy needs for a typical smart phone are not likely to go down anytime soon.

So, do you want the 4-5 inch screen smart phone slim and barely usable or will you tolerate a thicker phone you can use all day and then some?

If you're inclined to say I want the slim phone the carriers will love you because it means they can expect you will be less of a burden on the network due to not having the battery to do so...

Yes since going from p4 at 3.8GHz and 140w to dual core core duo's at 65w was such a horrible idea. Remember we are also moving from arm8 to arm9 soon too.
