dual core slow when using winrar?

I recently extracted a large win rar file, and experience some lag while trying to work with an office 2007 word document. I had thought dual core CPU would fix this issue.

Or am I mistaken? Granted, I had firefox and excel open...

but still.

what is the cause of this lag?

Most apps will not use dual core, if they are using 100% CPU power, they are using only one core, the other core is not used, therefore you won't feel lag, winrar supports dual core, it can use up both core to 100%, making all other programs lag. You can run winrar single threaded so that it only uses 1 CPU, leaving the other core free for other apps
