dual core recommendation

I have a san diego 4000+ in there now but would like to go dual core.

msi neo2 plat
4000+ w/ xp-90
2x512 ocz el plat rev 2
x1950pro agp

Any suggestions?

Dual core will be a nice step up. Definitely go for an Opteron if you plan to overclock. If you just want stock performance, you should be fine with an X2. If your budget is tight, go for the X2 3800+.

i would wait for prices do drop. i paid 120 bucks for my opteron 2 months ago...big mistake. prices have been going down for a while.

I've been quite happy with my Opteron 165 Denmark with the 2 X 1MB L2 cache. I've never even tried to overclock it.

I have a 939 X2-3800 that runs at 2.6 GHz at default voltage. I get temps near 60C under full load at that spee with an Arctic Cooling 64 Pro. It's a decent cpu for around $70.

I had a great opteron 170 that was able to get to 2.9 ghz @ 1.35v (set in bios). Got it from newegg about 8 months back. Stepping was CCB1E 0609fpaw

If you're an overclocker, I'd also recommend either the X2 3800 or the Opteron 165 or 170. But if you aren't, you're going to be highly disappointed in the performance of either, compared to your 4000, while using single-threaded applications, which way more than 90% of all software still happens to be. So, if you aren't an overclocker, I'd recommend an Opteron 180, which will be exactly the same speed as your 4000 in single-threaded apps, and nearly twice as fast in SMP-enabled apps.

Buy a new X2 4200+ (2.2GHz, 2 x 512KB L2), or a used Opteron 170 (2GHz 2 x 1MB L2).
Both should cost roughly the same $$.

Don't go for some of the other's recommendations where you give up processor speed.

I am running a 4000+ now at 2830MHz and would not consider less than a 2.4GHz dual core that I would try to push to at least the same speed.

I don't run much that benefits noticeably from a dual core at home.

Still more and more software is coming online that uses it.

I think with an Opteron 170 you can expect to hit around 2.6ghz on air without too much trouble.

That said, check me out:

2x1GB DDR2-800: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231098
$90

amd 6000+ 3ghz x2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819103773
$170

asus mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813131022
$99

Grand total for a new 3.0ghz dual-core system: $360 (before shipping). I did this in a hurry too - you could shave cash off the mobo, probably the memory, and get a slower CPU, but getting that CPU at that price (or the Intel C2D equivalent) makes a strong argument for saving your cash and upgrading in the near future.

$.02

I just went to a 175 Opty & it's running at 2.75 no prob. It was about $146. I wanted a 170 but they were back ordered so I got this & the 11 multi came in handy with the 4000 ram. Stock volts. Temps are good with the Alpha exhaust h/s.

Well 'back in the day', I paid $300 for an X2 4200+, and I don't regret it. The jump from Single- to Dual- core is great ... you won't regret it.

Yup, I wouldn't spend anymore than $70 on an ageing platform like 939. The x2 3800+ has no problem at ~250bus (2.5ghz).

I agree, on that aging platform, go with the X2 3800@ $64 (your link doesn;t work)

Agree - don't spend more money than you have to at this point. I bought a Toledo 3800+ and easily overclocked it to 2.5 Ghz. Great processor for $65. The Denmark's are nice, I'm not sure they are worth the cost right now.

Edit: I used an artice freezer 64 Pro for my Toledo, at a cost of $18 shipped. My Toledo will run at 2.6 Ghz as well, but I backed it down to 2.5 Ghz because it was "fast enough".
