Dual Core or Not

If I was to buy a high end gaming rig now would I go with an X2 or an FX CPU to last me at least 2 years? Wouldn't the X2 be more future friendly if/when game devs start using utilizing the cual cores capabilities for advanced physics, AI, etc? Or is that gonna be at least a few years down the road?

X2. Games are going that way fast, and drivers too ! Within a year a lot can change, and two cores@2500 will kill an FX@3.6 even if you get that high, if the app or game is multi-threaded.

Dual core 🙂

But honestly, with your system, I wouldn't upgrade until AM2 socket and DDR2. That P4 3.0 with HT will overclock and still be fine. I wouldn't want to upgrade from P4 3.0ghz to what will be a dead socket 939 right now. Your system is still very fast.

I probably won't, not until 48 or 64 pipe cards come out. When is the AM2 socket expected to arive?

Q2 2006. So spring. Not too long to wait. Normally with the waiting philosphy, you'll never buy. But your system is still good, so in your case you should extract some more value from your rig before upgrading. Plus if you get S939, you'll be stuck with DDR1, that you'll have to replace later on, and S939 that wont be upgradable. So in this case waiting 6 months does help you significantly imo, unless you are a hardcore gamer that needs the latest and greatest. I've been sitting on my P4 2.6@3.2ghz since 2003. So far everything is fast for general use and I dont play games so I felt no need to upgrade.
