It's been a long time since I built a system...

I need to build one to run calculations, but I'll use most of the parts I can from a current system.

The current machine has an Intel E6300 1.8Ghz, so the new system should be at least twice as fast.

Any suggestions?

a p35 board from asus/gigabyte/abit should be fine, which board you want depends on extra features (firewire, raid, built in wifi...)

You can do a complete, pretty mid-highend build for 1000$. That's not including the monitor, but even that could be done.

p35 mobo, like asus p5k, gigabyte ds3r can be had for 130$, or 100$ if you go with less options. You can go cheap and buy a abit ip35-e for 70$ AR. Memory, 2gb ddr2 800mhz crucial ballistix = 50$ AR, antec earthwatts 500w for 60$ AR. q6600 for 275$. That totals up to about 500$. If you want more then twice as fast, buy an aftermarket heatsink, and overclock the q6600 to 3.2-3.4ghz. You can throw in a 100$ HD, a 250$ videocard, and you have a pretty allround PC. For less then 1000$.
