Other than a mobo with a bios supporting X2 processors, XP patch for dual cores and dual core chipset/ graphics drivers is there anything else I need?

I've got OCZ 520 powerstreams, OCZ 3200EL platinum rev2, 7800GT video card and XP120 heatsinks.

Any special sequence to installation?

Thanks in advance for your replies

yup yup most definitely a clean install. Now if I can only convince myself that the X2 3800 that I recently purchased is good enough after all the threads about the awesome Optys.

there's no difference aside from the added cache and the potential for slightly higher overclocks (but higher temperatures).

A realistic goal is 2.5 Ghz out of that X2, while an Opteron might go to 2.7 Ghz. Faster, but not an earth-breaking difference. Especially since the Opteron 165 is all but extinct, so you'd end up paying more to get an Opteron.

You must be joking with this suggestion right?

Opteron expensive? might go to 2.7ghz & no difference?

There is at least 10% performance difference in X2 3800 2.5ghz and Opteron 165 2.7ghz. And for your information Opteron 165 is cheaper than X2 3800 and has 2 x cache then X2.

Um - he didn't say the opteron was expensive, he said it was "all but extinct," exaggeration yes but find me one selling for list. Find me one selling at all. :) If you can still find one for cheaper/same price than a 3800, get it, but don't pay more IMO.
