2xx Opterons are quite spendy, it wouldn't be much cheaper (though you could likely do faster for the money).

The real budget champ right now is a dual core Opteron OC'd to FX-60 levels.

You can get FX-60 performance out of a CPU that costs 1/3 or less as much.

the kicker is the FDIV bug. I still have my Pentium keychain.
