sorry to say those parts aren't even worth the $299.99 + shipping costs too.

you could build a E2180 rig for about the same or less and a have a faster stock cpu and way more overclockable too.

MB $55.00
cpu $60.00 E2160
ram $30.00
HD $75.00
dvd+_RW $25.00
case and PSU $55.00

and this would be a bettter rig.

tbogstad, no, you cant. How about 3gb of ram? $30? Sure this ram is pc5400, its still fast. And show me a good psu and case thats $55. SHOW IT.

Even though that Pentium D is netburst, its still no slouch. Especially when clocked at 3.4. In cache dependent applications this will smoke the 2160 even when overclocked. Plus, you wont have to worry about overclocking.

It's OOS now, but there was a deal this last week at Frys for some RAM for $10/GB AR ( link ). As for the case/PSU, link .

In 99.99% of cases, the E2160 or E2180 will be much faster than the Pentium D 945.

Here is the actual cost of the "Hot Deal":

TigerDirect:

$314.99 XFX barebones system:
Pentium D 945 OEM CPU (no CPU cooler included?)
XFX MG-610i-7059 motherboard
(1) Crucial 2GB PC2-5400 memory module
(1) Crucial 1GB PC2-5400 memory module
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB hard drive (SATA?)
Lite-On DH-20A4P-04 OEM DVD burner (IDE)
Power Up ATX Mid-Tower Case
Ultra LS500 Lifetime Series 500W PSU (not Active PFC?)

$ 19.99 Masscool 8W501B1M3G Socket 775 Intel Prescott CPU Cooler (it's the cheapest one I could find at TigerDirect)

$ 20.16 Ground shipping
$ 29.31 Sales Tax (TX)
---------
$384.44 SUBTOTAL

<15.00> TigerDirect Mail-in Rebate *COUGH,COUGH*

=====
$369.44 TOTAL

For the sake of comparison, here is a do-it-yourself system with more RAM and cooler, more energy-efficient parts:

ZipZoomFly:

$ 68.90 Pentium E2160 Retail Box CPU w/fan (easily overclockable to 2.8-3.2 GHz)
$ 56.99 Gigabyte GA-EG31M-S2 (1333MHz) motherboard (plan to buy a good video card)
$ 74.99 Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB SATA hard drive
$ 24.99 Pioneer DVR-212DBK 18X SATA "bulk" DVD burner (I prefer IDE, but this one is currently on sale)

$ 9.81 Shipping
---------
$235.68 SUBTOTAL

Frys.com:

$ 54.99 Antec NSK4480 Case w/EarthWatts EA-380 380W PSU
$ 79.99 Corsair TwinX 2x2GB PC2-6400 memory kit (I've seen better deals, but this one is available now with free shipping and no rebate required)

FREE SHIPPING
$ 10.12 Sales Tax (TX)
---------
$145.10

=====
$380.78 TOTAL

If you buy the TigerDirect system, you will save about $11. Woo hoo! 🙂

By the way, the shorter versions of the GeForce 8800GS or 9600GSO work very well with that case and power supply. (I got an EVGA 9600GSO with a dual-slot cooler at Fry's last week for $79.99 plus $9.90 tax after rebate). The total power consumption for the entire system should be less than 125W at idle (in Windows) before overclocking; I'm not sure what it is under full load. (I'm basing that number on my results with a Pentium E2200 and an Athlon X2 4400+.) You could have a really amazing machine for about $65 more with a Wolfdale Core 2 Duo E7200.

I think there should be a thread dedicated to members displaying possible desktop configurations and their prices, and maybe categorize each thread by pricerange.......

Theres the Antec case and 380W earthwatts for $55 with free shipping. And with the whole pentium thing, according to an xbitlabs review the E2160 smokes any pentium D at stock.

Sorry man. Pentium D processors suck balls. They run hot and consume a lot of power. While the price is very good, I think it's better to spend more money.

Or in this case, spend a comparable amount and get a E21xx processor which is MUCH cooler and still faster.
