Dual Classing question in Baldur's Gate

I'm thinking of having Imoen dual class when she hits level 6 (Thief/Mage). I don't want to give up her abilities to use a bow. I'm not clear on this. If I have her dual class as a mage when she's level 6 as a theif, does that mean I get ALL her abilities back at level 7 as a mage? INCLUDING her weapons abilities?
I'm torn about doing this. She's really useful right now as a theif, and I'd like to continue raising all her abilities (although she can get through any lock I've tried right now, and I don't really use backstabing). On the other hand, I don't have any mage in my party, and I'd like some magic of that variety-but maybe not at the expense of another archer.
Argh! :) What a terrible problem to have ;)

I've never dual-classed her before, but I know that when you dual-class a figther to mage, you are able to use swords again once you reach the same level. I would assume the same would apply in this case, that is, a Thief/Mage would be able to use a bow at level 6 (I thought it was at the same level, not the next level. Oh well). If you need another thief there are always Montaron and Safana...

BTW are you going to be buying Icewind Dale?

Thanks for the info! I think I'll dual class her.

Yep, I'm planning on getting Icewind Dale. Baldur's Gate is SOOO refreshing after playing console RPGs for years. It's so non-convaluted, easy to play, and non-linear.

I agree. I also can't wait for Neverwinter Nights. I would say that that game looks like its going to be fantastic, but that would be an understatement. Having a player be the DM instead of the computer is gonna put a whole new spin on the game...

Wow, for me Imoen always attacks first whenever I run into any enemy, no exceptions. Good to draw the first blood. Guess I play differently...

Yes, it's extremely funny to see Imoen do quadruple damage (up to 24 damage for my character) and see the target explode into gibs. Gib em, Imoen!

I can't remember what forums they were, but people were recounting their greatest backstabbing successes. The best one was a thief with 18/?? strength that was using the Defender +5... high level thief, he scored 120 points of damage. The guy claims it was with an unmodded character, too.

SufferinSuccotash,

I don't think I've ever seen any weapon in Baldur's Gate that was above +3. (One notable exception is Balduran's Sword, but the enchantment is good only against lycanthropes.) Do you remember where this "defender +5" weapon can be found?

HelloWorld,

The Defender +5 is Drizzt's sword. You either have to slay him or hack your saved character to give it to him/her. Or, if you want, I could e-mail you a character that has that and a lot of other cool weapons. The Defender +5 is really a Scimitar with +3 to hit/damamge, and a +2 to AC (actually -2; it gets better), so I guess they lump it all together.

SufferinSuccotash,

Thanks for your offer. Unfortunately, I've deleted BG, and don't really feel like installing it again, just to play with some magical items.

About Drizzt/Defender +5: I could never kill that guy, even with the "run around the lake and get Drizzt stuck on the pier" trick. He gibbed my "bait" character with one hit almost every time. I gave up after the 20th time or so. :)
