dual channel

hi all,
dual channel memory; is it incompatible with a mobo that doesn't support dual channel memory, like a socket 754 mobo?

by incompatible i mean will it prevent boot up or cause problems during use, or does the user just lose the benefits of the dual channel memory and it works just fine otherwise?

.. comanies that label ram "Dual Channel Kit" or along those lines, well, they are just normal ram, its just marketing.

so - there is no such thing as dual channel ram, ram is ram

hi aalbrecht,

there really is no such thing as dual channel memory... if you want dual channel memory, your ram must be the same type, size, etc.

so if you buy "dual channel" memory, what you are buying is two of the same sticks of ram. it will work fine in your computer

There is no such thing as dual channel for modern PC2100 - PC3200 DDR. For them dual channel just means that the motherboard links together two sticks of single channel RAM. So if you buy a "dual channel kit" it's really just a pair of single channel sticks that the manufacturer guarantees will work together properly.

There used to be single sticks of DDR and RDRAM that were dual-channel in the single stick (had twice as many data lines) but no modern motherboard uses this.
