Dual Channel vs Single Channel Memory

Hello!
I recently just built a system which included an nforce2 mobo. I intended on a dual channel memory configuration. I already had 1 512mb stick of corsair xms pc3200c2 ram from my old comp, purchased about 6 months ago. I bought another stick of the exact same ram, but I cannot get the two to work in dual-channel mode. I am assuming this is due to the fact that they are not the "twinx" models, so they were never tested in dual channel mobos. So my question is, what are the performance gains of dual-channel vs my current single channel setup? Am I doing myself a big injustice running 1gb of ram in single channel mode as opposed to 1gb in dual-channel? Is it worth it to upgrade to memory that has been tested in dual channel mobos, and run my setup in dual channel mode?

Thanks!

as far as i can tell theres no reason why those sticks shouldnt work in dual channel mode. As sinthon said, make sure they're in the right physical configuration, then you should try testing each stick individually. IIRC, on an nforce2 setup there is no big performance difference between SCDDR and DCDDR (a few % in some applications). However there is no reason why you wouldn't be able to run DCDDR, so you should see if you can get it to work.

TwinX is just marketing.

i have toyed around with this alot, and i cant seem to get it to work. i have used the correct physical configuration. windows will boot up, but restart once i get to the login page. no big deal. i just thought maybe there was some huge advantage to having my memory running in dual ddr mode.

anandtech recently printed an article about performance gains on that mobo are slim to none if you have a vid card, if you are using integrated graphics it would be worth your time to get it working

insert linky here

Edit: added link

had the same thing happening with a pair of xms modules. turned out one of them was bad. try running the new module in there by itself and see how it behaves.

thx for the link!
well my comp runs fine with both modules seperately, and right now I am running them both at the same time (in single channel) and everything is peachy.
I have tried very relaxed timings, and even underclocked my bus to 166mhz to see if I could get them running, and still no luck. Right now I am running a 2500+ at 200FSB with both modules installed at 2-3-3-6 and its rock solid. The best I did in dual ddr is 2.5-3-3-7 and windows actually loaded, but then I got some memory error but before I could even read it my comp rebooted.
I see the performance gains are nothing too special, so I'm not worried about it. I will take note for future upgrades of course.
Thanks everyone 😉
