I picked up an HP Z420 workstation with an E5-2695v2/32GB ram as a project. I'd like to see how well it can do at gaming. On what platform? Not many platforms support Quad channel memory, so I am curious what they are comparing.
Yup Ivy Bridge. The whole thing was only 160USD and it already has a 750w Corsair PS so don't have to bother with spending money on that. I assume it has 2x16GB ram and ECC DDR3 is pretty cheap so was thinking I might take the plunge. The E5-2695v2 has 12 cores but only clocks to 3.2 Ghz so that will probably hold it back some. The E5-2670 in this video runs 20C cooler than the i9-9900k which is pretty nice. Everything I have seen shows quad channel boasts performance. It will be fun to play with it. How did your Xeon do gaming?Ah ok, so that would be Ivy Bridge EP. I have a server which is an X99 board with a Xeon E5-1660v3. And 256GB of ECC DDR4Before it was a server I did use it as a gaming rig, and it was cool because the CPU could be overclocked.
As soon as I get the system I'll assess everything. I don't think the CPU on this system is overclockable. Finding specs online on these big company PC's is nearly impossible. I need to pair it with a GPU maybe a 5700XT or 6600XT.My Xeon did well enough in games, I had it clocked to 4GHz or a bit higher, though it wasn't as good an overclocker as my 5930k it seemed. I think it was paired with a 5700XT at the time.
How did you get your 2670 to overclock? I had one on an Intel dx79sr board in 2016 and then on an Asus x79 deluxe board in 2020 and I could only get 3 percent on the bclock? My Xeon did well enough in games, I had it clocked to 4GHz or a bit higher, though it wasn't as good an overclocker as my 5930k it seemed. I think it was paired with a 5700XT at the time.
