Dual Channel Ram Mixing

I've been looking to upgrade my current P4 system and the new Athlon64's have really made me think the time to do so is fast approaching. After reading up on the new processors, I have a question. My current system has two identical 256MB sticks of Kingston Hyper-X PC3200 operating in dual channel mode, which I plan to recycle into my next system. Due to the Athlon64's apparent apathy towards RAM type, would it be ok to go ahead and buy 2 value sticks of 256MB PC3200 and run those in dual channel as well on the other two memory slots?

I don't foresee any problem, but I wanted to make sure I wouldn't see any performance degredation or compatibility issues. If I can save money on the RAM, I can justify a more expensive video card a little easier.

Thanks for any input you guys have.

I Have a p4 system and that idea would work great.. but.. I think with 64's the performance of the fsb drops to 333mhz.. though.. we need a 64' owner to confirm that

I am a fellow noob to the AMD side. I just learned about this issue myself. I haven't gotten the details as to why, but the previous post is correct. When you have four sticks it will default to DDR333. I have been put under the impression that some mobos may allow you to manually reset the memory frequency. I have not been able to confirm this. But the best way to do this is to run just one pair. IE two 512 sticks.

That's a bit strange, no? Why would this occur?

If anyone has any info on this, I'd love to hear about it.
