Dual-channel question

Hi, my ram is in dual channel mode right now. I always thought that it meant my 2x 512mb sticks would function as one 512mb stick but with double the bandwidth. However my system shows 1 gig is available as memory. I know the performance gain with dual channel on an nforce 2 isn't that great, so would disabling dual channel yield me any benefits like more memory available?
 
That's quite a misconception there. You still have a gig of physical RAM no matter what. Go ahead and leave it in dual channel. My memory is a bit fuzzy on how exactly dual channel works, though, so you'll need someone else to explain that.
