dual channel memory

socket

If you have memory that was not purchased in pairs i have 2x 512mb ddr400 and i install it in a dual channel capable motherboard will it run dual channel even though the memory was not dual channel to begin with?

yup.

The reason RAM is paired for dual channel is to ensure optimum stability and compatibility.

But as long as the sticks are of the same size then they should work together no problem.

yes, it will work fine. Your motherboards will work them at the same timings and speed, so there should be no probelms. Dual channel memory problems only happened with RAMBUS memory, back in the early P4 days, where you had to check parity, bitage, speed, and latency.

Now, you just plug two memory sticks of the same speed and voila.

ok cool thanks for the info i got 2 x 512 memory sticks in a non dual channel capable board and the cpu retainer broke on it so i'm gonna buy me a dual channel board for my pent 4 northwood to get better perfromance out of the processor
