Dual Channel - How much RAM to add to my system

Currently I have an Intel Board that uses DDR2 and supports dual channel. Right now I have 2 256mb Kingston chips running. I am about to add more memory to help with a few games. I was originally going to buy one 512mb stick and just not run the dual channel. Would I be better off buying two more 256mb sticks and not being able to upgrade anymore down the road. I don't know that I would ever need over a gig of memory until my next upgrade, but I'm just not too sure...any insights?

Oh, how do I know if this board supports unbalanced dual channel? I don't think it does, but some help would be good.

First off: what is your board??????

Im pretty sure you can run unbalanced dual channel in any board ... So i'd just get the 512mb stick.

email intel's tech support to be sure.

Id go with two more 256s or with two 512s and sell the 256s, but that's just me (see sig)

Intel chips love memory bandwidth. Try 2x512MB, because you usually end up downclocking/possibly losing stability when you have all those memory modules (at least in a DDR1 mobo; you'll go from DDR400 to DDR333 as per JEDEC specifications).

after finally consulting the manual it seems that I can easily use my 2 256 sticks and another 512 stick together and still have the dual channel with no trouble. The 2 256 sticks will run one one channel, and the 512 on another. That's what I'm doing and hopefully someone else didn't read the manual and needs to know this too, heh.
