what slots do you need to have your ram in to run in dual channel? i always thought slot 2 and 3 was the best combination, but lately al i have been seeing is slot 1 and 3. does it matter?

In my 865PE board it goes like this:
In order to get dual channel with 2 sticks -
1) 1 in slot 1, 1 in slot 3
2) 1 in slot 2, in slot 4

In order to get dual channel with 4 sticks -
1) put them all in (1, 2, 3, 4) :)

However, I have no idea how it goes in nVidia chipsets >_<

EDIT: I'm going by the manual :)

Every board/chipset will be different. Some are nice enough to colour-code the slots, some aren't. So I'm going to go out on a limb here and say

RTFM :D

I have an Epox NFORCE 2, and I read that you need to have it in (2 or 3) and 1. (One of the two that are close to each other and in one that's farther away from the two).

www.8rdafaq.com

That's a great resource for anyone with a 8RDA or a NF7 motherboard! :)

Edit: oh - you had a a7n8x, but I think it's the same as on the nf7 or 8rda

Fill the middle slot last, on an A7N8X or A7N8X-Deluxe (avoids confusion).

The slots that sit close together are attached to one memory controller, and the "loner" slot is on the other. Put one module on each controller.

Press the Tab key at the logo screen from a cold start (so you can see the POST screen), and if you have the 1005 BIOS or later, it should say whether it's dual-channel or single-channel. If there are memory modules on both controllers, it has no choice but to run dual-channel, period.

Here's Asus' own blurb on the topic: blurb on the topic
