Dual channel DDR - on a single stick?

Is this something new, or have I just been out of the loop? I've not seen anything like this until recently; this RAM here, if those specs are accurate, looks pretty good. Fast timings, and it's even BGA. Is this stuff any good?

Looks interesting... Can anyone ID the chips used?

EDIT: BTW, from what I gather, it is compatible with dual channel DDR mobos, not dual channel on a single stick. Someone correct me if I am mistaken, although there is Virtual Channel 133.....

I think it's a marketing ploy. There is no such thing as dual channel DDR on a single stick of RAM. There isn't a chipset that could support it even if it were. You need two DIMMs occupied to get dual channel. I think they are implying that it is "optimized" for dual channel, not that you'd get dual channel from 1 stick.

wow never seen anything like that before. hmmm, but looking at the pics - the closest thing it resembles is Kingmax TinyBGA memory, but the PCB looks way different than anything that Kingmax would use. Anyone else know what this stuff is? BTW, I still don't see how it is possible to get DC-DDR from 1 stick of memory. After all, guidelines stipulate that two slots must be physically occupied with DDR for the tech to work.

imo, it's not possible to do dual channel ddr on a single stick because the one that controls dcddr is the memory controller, not the stick

to get dual ddr out of one stick you would need to double the number of "bits" of the stick of memory , (also means you would need to double the pin count of the single stick too) similar to what RDRAM went from 16bit to 32 bit etc. :)

the ram above i beleive is MARKETED as being optumised for dual channel opperation.

This sounds plausible; the website does say "We also call it DDR Dual Channel Bank, which has enhanced SPD designed for the newest Dual Channel DDR technology" - sounds sort of like it's just made to work in conjunction with a dual channel motherboard. The fast timings and BGA memory look nice though, at least for the price.

A lot of companies have started advertising this way, namely OCZ and Giel that i know of for sure. They just claim that their sticks are fine tuned through the SPD for dual channel operation. Nothing more. It would be interesting to see some comparisons to see if there's and validity to the claim though.

This says it all IMO.
If it were indeed a 128 bit DDR module, I have a hard time seeing how this could be possible.
  • Can work as regular DDR and Dual Channel DDR

Also, I can't help but wonder about the timings listen on the site, "CAS 2 6-3-3 2T Running @ DDR400Mhz PC3200" when the label on the white "Vinyl Chip Guard" says "CL 2.5".

Yeah; just regular memory, but BGA, and with fairly aggressive timings, and much cheaper than the Corsair I've seen. I wonder when reviews of this stuff will start appearing. The only other BGA RAM I know if is the Kingmax TinyBGA.

Not a scam, just marketing. In other words they're saying "Dual-Channel Ready". Or "Made-For Dual Channel Motherboards"

Isn't Rambus developing actual technology that will be similar to this? Like dual-channel per dimm for multiple dimm slots?

32 bit RIMM's have been available for some time.
Just a matter of time before 64 bit modules show up as well I guess.

Just a nudge to the top here - has anyone chanced upon any reviews of this stuff yet?
