I have a chance tommorrow to run dual cable modems. My friend is bringing his modem to my house.Would be as simple just to install another NIC and setup properties or would i have to get a special program.Oh and we have @haome and are on the same node so im thinking it might work.

what can you do with dual cable modems? Can you double your speed? That would be nice ;)Or can you just hope to get two ip addresses from one cable feed to the house?

I think you would need more than one computer because with @home your computer name is what allows you to access the service. And one computer can't have more than one name. It might be possible if you had a router with two uplinks, but you probably need alot of $$ for that.

For the record, it IS possible to aggregate 2 cable modems together and load balance the bandwidth from the two cable modems.

This is how I did it. 3 NIC's in my computer, 1 to the hub and 2 for the modems. You have to get some software for this to work. I found two places. Midpoint and Vicomsoft both have software that will connect as many modems as you need. It can use Phoneline modems, cable modems, DSL, and combine these all at once.

I used it for a week when a friend is out of town. I was getting 1800-1900kbps DL and 250kbps upload speeds.

The cost for increased bandwith from the cable company on one modem would be more than just getting 3 or 4 or 5 modems and teamimg them together.

I discussed this with the cable co and they had no problem with it.

I would go this route, but 2 things holding me back. I am not needing the bandwidth for about another three months. The most important is that I am getting a WIRELESS connection nextmonth. Speeds of 1Mbit DL AND UL for $200.00 per mo. This will include a mobile transiver I can take anywhere in the city and use.

Just wanted to share my experiences and hope it sets the record straight.

A couple problems with this idea...@home modems are very particular about their location, since you're both on the same node it might work, but not necessarily.

Furthermore, while you can balance the load between the two modems, the total throughput to your home is unchanged, you have a set upload and download limit no matter how many modems you run, it's capped at our servers.

Let me know if you get both modems to synch up, would be an interesting test.

I forgot to mention that I am on COX cable service. They say they are changing to @home, but it has not happened yet.

Each cable modem I had hooked up is on a 1024kbps DL and 128kbps ul rate.
