Dual Booting

I know this is off topic guys and I'm sorry. I just need some quick help and think I'll get a faster response here.

Now, I'm about to reinstall Win2K Pro and want to dual boot Linux with it. Last night I tried this (with an existing Win partition already on the drive) using partition magic to create a partition for Linux. Needless to say it was a terrible experience, now I have to reinstall my Win partition because I screwed something up. Since I'll be reinstalling now anyways I figure I should try it again. I know it isn't as simple as:

Install Win
Install Linux
Have fun

I tried that last night and it wouldn't let me boot into Windows, it went straight into Linux. So could someone please give me detailed step by step instructions? Thanks for your time.

After all of that (thanks to n0cmonkey for helping me out!) this is where I am. Win is screwed, so I'm starting from scratch.

With Partition Magic you can also creat multiple Primary partitions on your harddrive. After creating the first Primary partition you hide it and then create the second etc. You can only have one active primary partition at a time with the remaining partitions being hidden.

It's been awhile, but I believe PM has a boot utility that allows you to choose your desired partition on bootup. If I'm mistaken, I know you can make a boot floppy that allows you to choose the boot partition.

Doing it this way prevents any one OS from trashing any other OS.

Did you install a bootloader with it? I had a similar problem last night (except I could still get into windows) \. I booted into the system recovery console and did a fixmbr. It cleared out GRUB and windows started fine. From there, I just booted into windows and deleted the partitions.

Screw Partition Magic, You will just end up with problems later on down the road. Its best to create and format your Win2k logical drives using the Win2k diskpart utility then leave the amount of space you want to run Linux with unallocated then boot from you Linux distro CD and use the partitioning tool during the linux setup and let it auto allocate the remaining harddrive space to create your Root/swap/Home spaces. What Distro are you trying to install ?
