Install Vista first, then install Ubuntu. By default Ubuntu will provide it's own bootloader called GRUB which will allow you to have a menu to choose between Windows and Ubuntu. As long as Vista is installed first, GRUB will recognize that there is another OS installed and provide the options to boot into it.

If you want to learn grub, download the Ultimate Boot CD and somewhere in the bounty of software the disc contains is GRUB.

thanks guys...ok so say i installed Dream Linux, would i need to do this Grub first or does it come with it? i assume grub is just something i run first then install the OS?
i already have Vista installed, so i can pop in Ubuntu and choose the partition and be set right?

now should the partition be formatted or unallocated?

Boot the Linux disk and point the installer to the Unallocated space. Grub will be installed and setup during the later part of the installation, it comes with most if not all linux flavors.
