dual booting: winxp pro and win2k server

I'm looking to do a dual install of winxp pro and win2k server on my 1.3Ghz laptop so that I can use it as a filer/web server/mess-around-with-win2kserver machine. Windows XP would be installed to do every thing else. Is there any special order that I need to install the OSs in so that it does not "upgrade" the O/S instead of install a second one? Should I partition the 20gig HD into 2 10gig drives?

You will need to install to separate partitions. Install W2K first. When that is done, install XP to your 2nd partition. It will detect the W2K installation and update your bootmanager with the required stuff. As long as you install each to its own partition, you should have no problems. Make sure you install the older OS first or you're in for a major headache.

Thanks for the advice bozo1!🙂

i'll probably setup 3 partitions, 1 for xp pro, 1 for win2k server, and 1 for common files. How big should I make the two OS partitions? I have a 20gig drive.

How big the partitions should be depends on how you want to use them. I'd say, if you just want a basic firewall/router/webserver with your Win2k Server installation, and do more gaming and general apps with your WinXP setup, and you also work with larger data file and/or plan on keeping a few MP3s and DivXs for entertainment, perhaps you could use 4GB for Win2k Server, 6GB for WinXP, and 10GB for data files.
