I have win98 loaded now. Can I load XP on a different partion and get the usual boot menu that lets me decide which OS to load?
To do this do I have to load XP in NTFS format or can I go Fat32.
My system is mostly a gaming system. Will that make a difference if I chose NTFS over Fat32 with XP being a "better" OS?

You should be able to install XP on a different partition (not the upgrade though ;)) Leave it FAT32. C'os win98 cant read NTFS.
Not sure if XP needs to have the C partition or not. Try to install it on D: (if D drive) and see if XP will let you select a destination (hopefully it would). If not cancel the install. Sorry i don't have anymore knowledge than that. G/L Hopefully someone can post a better explaination for ya. :)

<< but will XP's boot loader work if your not using NFTS? >>

Yep. the boot loader supports FAT16 (who uses it anymore?), FAT32 and NTFS.

Here is what I did just yesterday.

I have 2 hard drives and formatted drive D: with fat32. My C: drive is win98SE.

I downloaded the setup disks from M$ for XP Pro (there is one for home also) and booted from floppy.

During setup, it asks where to put XP. I moved the bar highlite to drive D: FAT32 and all was cool. It is a panel that comes up showing the hard drives/partitions on your system.

P.S. This was on an old P200MMX with 128MB Simms!! Also, since my wife still uses 98se for a while, I changed the default to just boot into Win98SE if nothing is selected within 6 seconds. Otherwise it does boot to XP.
