Dual booting Win98 & ME... How?

OK, so I have Win98 on my C partition and last night I installed BootMagic, then WinME on my D partition. I tried to tell BootMagic to boot Win98 off of the 1st partition and WinME off the 2nd (after booting from a rescue disk, as WinME overwrites the MBR), but I could only get WinME to boot. I couldn't get win98 to boot at all as WinME overwrote all the files (command.com, io.sys, autoexec.* config.*) in C too.

So:

- How do I get Win98 & WinME to co-exist?
- How do I do this with BootMagic?

Thanks all!

The only way that comes to my mind right now, is to set BIOS to boot from C: or D: , if there is such an option.I don't know how to do this with Bootmagic though.

Make a batch file with a menu choice pointing to C or D, call it autoexec.bat and place it in the root of your C drive.

I tried the BIOS C:/D: thing, but that didn't work. What do you mean by a batch file?

Has anyone actually dual booted these two, and if so, could you give me some advice?

Thanks

YOU CANNOT NATIVELY DUAL BOOT BETWEEN any WIN9x OS, INCLUDING ME.

But, it is still possible. You MUST use a tool like BootMagic or System Commander. Within those programs, you MUST hide on install from the other. So, yes, you will have a C: for Win98 and a *different* C: for WinME. I don't use either of those tools, so cannot give you any more advice.

Ok, I have BootMagic, but how do I "hide" one from the other? Anyone?

Install Win98 on the C partition and install bootmagic. I assume you have Partition Magic because you have Bootmagic, they are bundled together> Use Partition Magic to set your D partition as active. It's in the options menu. Reboot and install Win ME. Reboot again and use the Bootmagic menu to select Win98. Go to the Bootmagic setup screen and add WinME to the list. When you reboot you will have both OS's listed so you can choose. Boot Magic will Hide the other partition that you don't choose from the list,so they will coexist.

does that mean that when you have, say win98 running, you cant see the win me partition?? so i guess i should have my prog files on another partition so both os's can use the programs?

Pretty much. But please be very careful when sharing the same program files across OSes. You can hose yourself. But, I must admit that I do it ... for WinAmp, AudioGrabber, and a few other MP3-related proggies.

But, dual-booting between WinME and Win98 probably isn't worth it in the end. It's like dual-booting Win95 and Win98. Once everything works in one, you won't need the other.

yeah, i was basically going to install it for testing purposes. always want the lastest/greatest software. but from what i read in the forum, it's basically a tweaked win98se. i suppose i can do without it. well, that means less hassle for me to install then. thanks for the info SUOrangeman. :)
