What filesystem is currently used for Win2K? If it is NTFS, yer gonna need the latest Ghost (6.5). I am not sure if it will let you ghost to a smaller partition (shouldn't be that big of a deal). In either case, you *may* want to create the partitions on the 20GB HD in advance.

When you get the new drive, put in on Primary Master and move the 18GB (assuming that it is already PriMas). Ghost the WIn2K to 10GB or whatever. Disconnect the 18GB and try to boot Win2K. If it works, you can then go ahead and reconnect the other drive and make other partitions.

before installing Win9x, make an emergence repair disk with the backup util. When you install Win9x, use 'setup /ntldr' and hope that it won't overwrite the NT loader. It *should* just add a value for Win9x on the menu (you probably haven't seen the menu before because only WIn2K was isntalled; but it's there). If the Win9x install doesn't play fair, you'll need the Win2K CD (and your repair floppy) to repair the boot sector.

I believe that W2K like NT looks for boot files in a particular partition based on a text file in the root directory (boot.ini?). So if you installed in the first part and moved it to the second part of another drive it won't be able to find the OS loader. You can fix this by editing boot.ini substituting the correct part #.

Here is what I would do. I find Partition Magic and Drive Image from Powerquest to be essentials for juggling OSs.

Boot to DOS and on the new drive use Partition Magic or FDISK to create two primary partitions, whatever size you want. I might make them 5g each, that way if you want later you still have room to add 2 more primaries for other OSs. No need to format them at this point. Make the rest of the space an extended part and create a logical drive. Format this. Then set the first primary partition active to make it visible.

Reboot and fire up Ghost or Drive Image. Dump the 2K image to the logical drive on the second drive. Restore to the first primary partition on the second drive. Shut down and make the second drive master and boot to 2K just to be sure. If all is well at this point, boot to DOS, delete the primary partition on the 10g drive and create an extended partition with at least one formated logical drive. Next format the second primary partition on the 20g drive and make it active. Install 98 to this partition. When finished you will need something like IBM boot manager or Boot Magic (free with Partition Magic) to choose an OS at boot time.

This is one way, there are others...
