I agree with you when saying that this is redundant. But see my case, for example... My father bought a hd just to play flight simulators and I installed W98SE and didn't touch it anymore. I have, on the same system, my 30Gb drive with all the systems and stuff I want (including Me) and this is the reason I have to use a boot manager (choosing between Me and 98SE, among others...).
Maybe this is his case. If not, it is really redundant.
