Dual boot XP home and Linux

Ok got an extra 40 Gig HD that I want to use to dual boot xp and Linux Linux on the spare drive

I know there are thousands of links but cant find any at the moment. Anybody point me in the correct direction.
And a Good place to start downloading programs at?
