Dual boot Win2k and XP Pro ... questions!!!

Ok, I have Win2k running on my machine currently but I also just got WinXP Pro and I want to dual boot. My HDD is set up as follows:

10gb OS (primary partition)
83gb (extended partition) with 63gb in D logical drive (Program Files) and 20gb in E logical drive (Backup)

So here are the questions:

I assume you have to install each OS on its own partition/logical drive?

Is it possible to just install WinXP and have a choice of booting to either?

Do I need to reformat and start clean or can I just install WinXP on my current OS partition?

After all that, when I have dual boot working, is there a way to have both registries modified when I install a program or do I have to install it on both operating systems (won't that take up a lot of space because I'll have to install everything twice)?

If I have to format, should I use NTFS for both operating systems? I heard FAT32 blows and needs constant defragging.
