dual boot? why?

i dont know too much about operating systems, my question is, can you install win 2k alone or do you have to install both(win 98 and win2k)
why is the purpose of dual booting? advantages/diadvantages?

thanks,

You can install with or without another OS.

Most people who dual boot do it with win98 and Win2K. Win98 for gaming and Win2K for everything else. Other people have more then just two OS's, like Win98, Win2K and linux. I used to do this but I never used any of them except Win2K so I erased em all except 2K.

People do it because they claim they can't get certain apps to work under Windows 2000. IMHO, you can get just about anything to run under W2K 🙂

You don't need a Win98 partition.

i have linux and windows on my comp cuz basically i wanted to learn linux but still had a lot of programs on windows that would be difficult to find for linux so i wanted both. hmmmm, haven't touched the linux side lately tho 😛

While I agree that most stuff can be made to run under 2K, I now have a problem that is making me want to set up a dual boot system. I Purchased a new Geforce2 vid card with DVR support. No where on the box or in the book does it say "Win2K not fully supported" but sure enough, the one option that makes DVR what it is is not suppported, timeshifting :| ! So I am now considering a dual boot system, 98 for DVR and Win2K for every thing that there is full support for.

at work, most of the PCs are NT4. some of our PC programmers have Win2000 & NT4 installed & they dual boot. while i'm not a PC programmer(i'm an AS/400 programmer), i've been told that writing & running code is different, depending on whether you're on NT4 or 2000.
