Dual Boot SATA + IDE

I know I'm not the first one to inquire about SATA and IDE, but the past threads didn't clear my problem.

I'm using brand new everything basically, except I kept an IDE harddrive from my last computer.

I installed Windows on my SATA drive and boot off it, everything works fine. When I plug in my IDE drive and put it lower on the boot order list than the SATA drive, windows works except it stalls for over a minute when my computer is detecting drives and things run noticably slower. Something is wrong.

1) I need to get the IDE drive to run properly and not f' my computer. Any idea what I should change in bios?
2) I want to install Unix on my IDE drive after it starts working properly so I can have the chance to boot off one or the other when my computer starts up.

Any input will help so much,
Thanks in advance guys,
Tyler Lucas

No. Should I try that?
What I did is this:
I set my Sata how it is and have it boot first.
I have my Primary Master as my IDE
I have my Secondary Master as my DVD Drive.

What should be changed?

I have a SATA drive and an IDE drive hooked up on my computer as well and it seems to work fine. In BIOS my settings have all boot devices disabled and SATA above IDE in HD boot settings. My IDE drive is set in primary, but maybe you could try setting it to slave and seeing if that helps the problem?

Yup. It should recognize the OS on the SATA drive if you set it at a higher priority.

If you want to install *nix on the IDE drive, you'll have to set the IDE drive to the primary boot device and let *nix take care of the rest.

Have you checked to be sure the cable is installed correctly and all that? What you describe sounds similar to reversing the ends of a ATA-133 cable (i.e. system cable end to hard drive, hard drive cable end to system.) I couldn't figure out what the crap took it so long to boot for -weeks-, then got irritated at my BIOS' constant warnings one day, and switched it. Boot lag went away.

Ok I just tried everything:

I tried making my IDE drive my Prim Master, Prim Slave, Secondary Master. No avail.
I unplugged it again because it laggs my boot and comp when its plugged in. I formatted it too..

Also, different problem, for some reason I have the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon... But its asking if I want to remove my SATA harddrive (Which I boot off of...) , why the hell would that happen?
