Dual Boot Debian

I just downloaded a DVD of Debian because I would like try it. My main OS for now is Windows 7. Is there any nice little boot thing that would allow me to select an OS at boot, or something like that, but not too hard to install 😉. Thanks in advance.

Also, I would like to install Debian on my Raptor, Windows is on my Caviar Black. Is this possible? And doesn't the Raptor need to be formatted like ext3 or some odd linux formatting?

A better idea at least in the short term is to download Microsoft Virtual PC or VMWare and install Debian on a virtual machine for now.

As to your other questions, yes you will need to repartition your raptor if you choose to go that route.

Oh, well I installed it and all is good, but now I find myself wondering what the advantages to Debian are over like W7. Also, is there any 3D acceleration support for my card? I tried getting the driver off NV site, but it didn't want to install or something. I know so little about linuxes 🙁

I find that any advantage that linux has over windows (other than price) directly correlates with the knowledge level of the user. If your a newbie or you aren't really savy with manually compiling and installing software, then you become a slave to the GUI as preconfigured for you and ultimately will find that it isn't as simple or user friendly as Windows. All I can say is try it out and see how it goes.

No matter how much I try to get into linux, I ultimately always come back to Windows because I find that much of the free software, although good, isn't as accomodating as proprietary software.

It does seem a bit snappier, though it may be in my head, or the various programs installed on my PC. And yeah...I don't quite understand it how to install stuff etc...Plus Quake Live doesn't work on Ice Weasel 🙁 though that's probably driver support.

I don't quite understand it how to install stuff

Well if you enable the contrib and non-free software in synaptic you should have just about all of the free software you could want. I would also recommend adding the repositories from http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ as they have some packages that didn't make it into Debian because of questionable licensing and such.

Stuff outside of Debian will vary wildly and you should probably stay away if possible because it's usually a lesser known project and will want you to compile stuff from source. If you really must, there's usually a README and/or INSTALL file bundled that should get you started.
